Chapter Six

Three weeks later Jane and Angus were sitting in Xander’s office. The tests and X-ray had all been done and the results were in front of him.

“Well, Jane, I’ve looked at the X-rays and I’m afraid there’s only one course of action that I can recommend.” Xander opened his laptop and showed them the X-ray. “See here, this cartilage is not only out of place but also damaged beyond repair. You need a total knee replacement operation. When you fell you must have twisted it as well.”

“What exactly does that mean?” Angus asked. He could see that Jane was worried. Her hip operation had slowed her down for a few months and resulted in a depression that she’d had to fight to overcome.

“It’s a painful operation. I won’t lie to you. You will have to do physiotherapy for a long time, but swimming will help. You will need help around the house, too. There are risks and you may recover totally or you may be left with a stiff knee. However, the state your knee is in is going to get worse and more painful. I can give you injections, which may help for a while, but they aren’t a permanent solution. Do you want to go home and think about it?”

“Yes, I think I’d prefer that,” Jane said.

She was subdued all the way home. Angus let the silence continue until they arrived. He had no wish to discuss such an important matter in the car. In any case, if she’d time to think about it they could have a meaningful discussion later. When they got home he sat her down on the sofa and made a pot of tea. Then he carried it into the lounge with a plate of her favourite chocolate digestive biscuits. He poured her a cup, added milk, and offered a biscuit, which she took and started to nibble, pensively.

“Now, mo run, tell me what you’re thinking.”

He sat beside her and put one arm around her, pulling her close to him.

“I’m scared, Master. My mother had the same operation, and she ended up in pain and unable to walk. I don’t want to be like that,” she said and began trembling. He took her cup and placed it on the table. Then he gathered her in his arms, holding her close until she calmed.

“Mo run, that was many years ago. They have made great advances, and I know that if Xander does the operation he will make a success of it. Look at your hip. It’s as good as new. One thing I do have to say is that you will rest, and you will not start to worry about the house until you are well recovered. You may speak to Jaimie, and you can ask him to come here for a couple of hours a day if he’s able. He’ll be company for you and he will lift the burden of cleaning and washing et cetera off your shoulders. You will be concentrating on doing the exercises and getting better.
